The #BlueMonday Protest at Lira University: A Call for Accountability

Students at Lira University have taken to the streets in a peaceful demonstration dubbed #BlueMonday to protest against the administration’s lack of accountability and the recent increase in tuition fees. According to reports, the protest follows a long-standing issue of unaccounted-for funds allocated from the guild fund, amounting to UGX 14 million, which were meant to install lights on the University roads.

The students are seeking accountability from the administration and transparency in the use of funds allocated for the students’ welfare. They are calling for fair treatment and better governance, which they believe should not go unheeded.

The protest serves as a reminder that the voices of students must be heard, and their concerns and grievances must be addressed. The students are calling on the university administration to be accountable and transparent in its operations. They are also urging the government to prioritize education and ensure that every student has equal access to quality education.

While the protest started peacefully, the police intervened and engaged the students, who were demonstrating against the increase in tuition fees and the lack of accountability for guild fees. The students’ grievances are legitimate, and they have the right to voice their concerns without fear of violence or repression.

The Guild Speaker of Lira University, Rt Hon. Mbinga Ronald Kule, has joined the students, showing true leadership and solidarity. Student leadership is vital in any institution of learning, and it is heartening to see the Guild Speaker standing with the students and advocating for their rights.

Education is a fundamental right, and every student has the right to access quality education without the burden of exorbitant fees. The protest highlights the need for the government and all stakeholders to prioritize education and ensure that it is accessible and affordable to all.

The students’ call for accountability and transparency in all institutions of learning is a necessary step towards ensuring that education is accessible to everyone. We urge the university administration and the police to engage in constructive dialogue with the students and listen to their concerns.

As Campus Weekly, we stand with the students of Lira University and call for peaceful dialogue to find a lasting solution to this issue. The voices of students must be heard, and their concerns addressed to ensure that education is accessible and affordable to all.
